Why on earth would anyone CHOOSE to run?? Are you crazy?! I hear this often. Well, let me tell you why I run.
Heart health. There is the most obvious reason to run – it benefits the heart. The heart is a muscle that needs to be exercised just like any other muscle. The stronger it is, the less it has to work to pump blood throughout your body.
Stress relief. Nothing relieves stress better than setting out for a long serene run. Anytime I start to feel a little overwhelmed with life’s troubles, I go for a run. It clears my mind, gives me a sense of accomplishment, and most importantly reminds me of the amazing creation all around me.
Camaraderie. Some of my closest friends are those that I have met through running. It’s so easy to meet up with a friend, set out for a run, and get to catch up while doing it. And races! How fun are those?! Thousands of people all gathered with a common interest. I have found runners to be so welcoming and so friendly!
One of the best parts of running is it does not require a special facility or special equipment. All you need is a pair of running shoes and the outdoors. Just getting started?Start out with shorter runs and do a run/walk interval. Slowly decrease your intervals of walking until you are able to run the entire distance.
So, what are you waiting for? Lace up your shoes, walk out the door, and GO.
